Why is this drug prescribed: Tussi-Organidin NR is used to relieve coughs and chest congestion in adults and children. It contains guaifenesin, which helps thin and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up. It also contains a cough suppressant, the narcotic codeine.
Most important fact about this drug: Tussi-Organidin NR may cause you to become drowsy or less alert. Alcohol will intensify this effect. Driving, operating dangerous machinery, or participating in any hazardous activity that requires your full mental alertness is not recommended until you know how you react to this medication.
How should you take this medication: Take Tussi-Organidin NR exactly as described. When giving the liquid to a child, use a calibrated dropper to measure the dose. --If you miss a dose... Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular schedule. Never take 2 doses at once. --Storage instructions... Store at room temperature in a tightly closed container, away from light.
What side effects may occur: Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any side effects develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine whether it is safe to continue taking Tussi-Organidin NR. More common side effects may include: Constipation, nausea, pinpoint pupils of the eye, vomiting Less common side effects may include: Dizziness, headache, rash At higher doses, this medication may also cause light-headedness, drowsiness, slowed breathing, and an exaggerated sense of well-being.
Why should this drug not be prescribed: Do not take Tussi-Organidin NR if you are allergic to codeine or guaifenesin.
Special warnings about this medication: Because it contains codeine, Tussi-Organidin NR may cause drug dependence and tolerance with continued use. Do not use this product in children under 2 years of age. Be cautious if the child has an allergy. Do not take Tussi-Organidin NR for the constant cough brought on by smoking, asthma, chronic bronchitis, or emphysema unless your doctor recommends it. If your cough lasts for more than 1 week, tends to come back, or is accompanied by fever, rash, or persistent headache, check with your doctor. Be sure to tell the doctor if you have any breathing problems, a severe abdominal condition, kidney or liver problems, an underactive thyroid gland, or an enlarged prostate. Also alert the doctor if you suffer from seizures, have had a head injury, or have recently had stomach, intestinal, or urinary tract surgery.
Possible food and drug interactions when taking this medication: If Tussi-Organidin NR is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either could be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Tussi-Organidin NR with the following: Alcohol Antihistamines such as Actifed or Benadryl Drugs used to treat anxiety or depression, such as Librium and Prozac Sedatives such as Dalmane
Special information if you are pregnant or breastfeeding: If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, inform your doctor immediately. The safety of Tussi-Organidin NR during pregnancy has not been established. Tussi-Organidin NR should not be taken if you are breastfeeding.
Recommended dosage: ADULTS AND CHILDREN 12 YEARS AND OLDER: Tussi-Organidin NR The usual dosage is 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours, not to exceed 12 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours. Brontex The usual dosage is 1 tablet or 4 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours. Do not take more than 6 tablets in a 24-hour period. CHILDREN 6 TO 12 YEARS OF AGE: Tussi-Organidin NR The usual dosage is 1 teaspoonful every 4 hours, not to exceed 6 teaspoonfuls in 24 hours. Brontex The usual dosage is 2 teaspoonfuls every 4 hours. Do not give tablets. CHILDREN 2 TO 6 YEARS OF AGE: Tussi-Organidin NR Your doctor will determine the dosage according to weight. The recommended total daily dosage is 1 milligram per 2.2 pounds of body weight, divided into 4 small doses.
Overdosage: Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical treatment immediately. Symptoms of Tussi-Organidin NR overdose may include: Alternate periods of not breathing and rapid, deep breathing, bluish skin coloration, cold and clammy skin, constriction of the pupils of the eye, delirium, delusions, double vision, excitement, extreme sleepiness progressing to stupor or coma, flaccid muscles, hallucinations, low blood pressure, restlessness, slow, shallow, or labored breathing, slow heartbeat, speech disturbances, vertigo
